Gail Burket passes away

It is with a heavy heart that we received the news from Tim Beck that Gail Burket passed away. Our thoughts and prayers are with her husband, Glenn, their children, grandchildren, family and friends.

Pat Szoka passes away

It is with a heavy heart that we received the news from Dale Bado that our beloved friend Pat Szoka from Lorain County Beagle Club passed away. Our deepest sympathy, thoughts and prayers are with George, their children, and the rest of the family and friends.

Shirley Hamrick passes away

It is with a heavy heart that we received the following from Shirley and Glen's son, Jeff that his dear mom and our friend Shirley Hamrick from Lookout Beagle Club passed away.  Our deepest sympathy and prayers to her family and friends.  You will forever be in our hearts and live on through the many cherished memories.  We can still see you and Glen dancing and now you are together again.  You are a true treasure that will be missed beyond measure.

Please continue to watch over us our dear guardian angel!

It's with great sadness that I announce that my loving mother has passed away. She loved her family and church very much and will be greatly missed. The viewing will be at Julian Peeples funeral home Friday 5 to 8. The funeral will be Saturday at 2.

Jim Halley passes

It is with a heavy heart that we received the news from Jim Halley’s youngest son, Chad that Jim passed away around 2:00 p.m. this afternoon, 12/20. They had taken him to the hospital last night and Chad and Patricia have been by his side since he came home from the hospital a couple of weeks ago. The service will be Friday, 12/23 and I have no details at this time.

Jim went to college, ran track, played football on a scholarship. After college, he coached football and track for 25 years  and managed to get his Master’s Degree in Political Science. He also served in the Air Force before he started teaching. He is a member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church.

Jim belonged to Apple Valley and Fauquier and also belonged to Albemarle when he first got started and got his first third and he was really hooked. His Dad would drive him to Old Dominion, Apple Valley, etc. Jim purchased his first beagle in 1952, which was of Yellow Creek Banjo breeding and that’s when it all started.  He ran his dogs under the kennel name Halley’s beagles. His first Field Champion was Halley’s Sammy when he was 18 years old in 1958 then Halley’s Nick and then one of his favorites, Halley’s Highlander who produced many champions for him. Many years ago, how many of us heard about Halley’s Highlander and he always had something good to say about him and no one could beat him in Jim’s eyes. Back then he also had Potomac Chapel Jesse who was another producer. Jim studded Little Ease J.D., Close Call Chaplin and his latest Close Call Country Boy III with Travis Cain.

Jim was a force to reckon with whether it was at license trials, federations or sanction trials.  He was a very tough competitor with his females. His first highlight was an Archie female he raised, Halley’s Glory Trail who produced 3 and bred her to Black Bandit and got a National Brace Champion, Valley Ridge Betty who produced 3 and had sold as a pup and bought back. He would tell you she was the best he ever raised. Another favorite was Halley’s Chrystal who won the Purina Award in the 15” Female class. He finished Halley’s Blue Bonnet three weeks after Chrystal. Jim has been field trialing for over 70 years, served as President of Fauquier for over 25 years. In 1998 he was elected to the Virginia Hall of Fame and in 2005, he was elected to the Breeders Hall of Fame. Halley’s Special was elected in the Hall of Fame in 2006 then Halley’s Sagebrush in 2011. Other Field Champions were Halley’s Charmer, Jessica, Sarah, Betty Ann, Tracey, Lisa, Stacey, and others. Jim always supported the federations, license trials, would judge trials and just support beagling in any way he could. He loved his derbies and futurities. Jim once stated when he first started in 1950, it was all about dogs winning; but things have changed and it is also about the friendships. I believe most of us have many cherished times with Jim, whether it was at a field trial, out to eat, talking in the field or in the club house, parties and banquets, and he will forever be in our hearts and forever live on through the many cherished memories.

Another highlight for Jim was that he loved to deer hunt on his property and had many pictures and posts proving it. He loved his home and property in Virginia, which was his personal paradise and his home of peace and serenity. Jim loved his beagles and was very dedicated and devoted to our sport on all levels and are proud of all the accomplishments. He was a past member of ABBA since it was implemented. He wrote articles on raising pups and on rabbit farming. He judged trials, a couple federations, and would support beagling in any way he could.

His smile and giggles would warm your heart and we all loved his stories. Jim thank you so much for your dedication and devotion to our sport. You are a true treasure that will be missed beyond measure! You were a loving, caring father and friend that leaves a big void and a hole in our hearts. Now you are an angel with wings, your pain and suffering has ended and you can run all the dogs you want and your smile and glow will continue to shine on us all! Rest in Peace our Dear Friend and Soar with the Eagles.

You Will Always Be Someone Missing with us all.  Here are some highlights with Jim

Stan Peterson passes away, information from Lynette Coil

It is with a heavy heart that we received the news from Wayne Carlson and Karen Eurick that Stan Peterson passed away on Friday, January 27, 2023 at the age of 85 around 11:20 p.m.

Stan’s suffering ended Friday night and he is joining the love of his life, best friend, and late wife, Sue who left this earth a couple of years ago.  His daughter, Susan Peterson Chipman (Steve) and son, Scott (Caroline) Peterson has been by their Dad’s side and our thoughts and prayers are with his family, grandchildren and friends. May God grant your family and friends all they need to get through this difficult time. My prayer for you today is for God to take care, bless and Protect you and your loved ones. We were blessed to have you in our sport and thank you for your years of hard work, dedication, devotion and even the stubbornness to being the instrumental member you have been all these years in beagling.

He was President of his home Club, Lake Erie for many years and he ran his beagles under the kennel name Time Beagles and had many field champions throughout the years. He served as the IBF President twice, was a member of Coraopolis, and was General Chairman of the National for over 20 years. He was the main cog in the wheel in working with AKC and making the National a License Trial; which has become the biggest trial brace beagling has and worked with Coraopolis being the permanent host of the National versus floating around the country year to year. Stan was instrumental in working with Purina as a sponsor and participating with the prizes at the National, the auction donations, feeding the trial and a couple of years ago passed the baton to Wayne Koelsch who is the current Chairman of the National. Stan judged many license trials through the years, beat brush, marshaled, participated at the federations and not only competed but supported the license trials in New York state, Pennsylvania and Ohio. Stan was very involved with the IBF, help coordinate the midwinter meetings in Ohio which eventually went to a yearly meeting that is held at Coraopolis at the International. He always worked closely with Coraopolis to have a successful trial and Purina still sponsors a steak fry on Saturday night of the National. He always served as a delegate and would help beagling in any way he could. Stan went into the Hall of Fame that Hounds and Hunting has supported for brace beagling in 1993, which was a very emotional and high honor. Stan was a true asset to our sport and has left a big void when his health started to fail. There aren’t a whole lot of people who are willing to step up to the plate and work as dedicatedly at Stan did.

We truly thank you for all you gave and sacrificed. We definitely need more people like this to carry on what is needed and required in our sport. You will forever be in our hearts and live on through the many cherished memories and stories throughout the years. Your suffering has ended and you can run all the dogs you want as the sun shines upon you and soar with the eagles. May you rest in peace as you join that big meeting in the sky and give everyone a hug for us.

I know your children and grandchildren would want you to know that…..

Chris Lehneis passes away, information from Lynette Coil

It is with a heavy heart that we received the news from Dale Pliscott and Doug Lesight that fellow beagler and good friend, Chris Lehneis passed away this afternoon, February 5, 2023 from his battle with cancer.

Chris was a very devoted and successful beagler and belonged to Maryland and Patapsco Ridge.  He was a great competitor with his Timber Grove beagles and finished many, was a good breeder, and his latest service position was Field Trial Secretary of Maryland Beagle Club.  Chris supported license and sanction trials, federations, was always a gentleman and had a wonderful smile.  He came to the Mid Dixie last year with his good friends, Jerry Houck and Doug Lesight.  When there were 7 federations, he supported them all till the cancer slowed things down for him.  He has fought a long and courageous battle and beat it for quite awhile.  He was thankful for the cards, phone calls, well wishes and prayers during his battle.  He is a true treasure who will be missed beyond measure.  He was a true sportsman and gentleman.  When you met Chris, you didn't forget him and was a great friend to so many of us.  Chris definitely left footprints not only in our hearts but the sport of beagling.  There are many cherished memories and good times through the years.  We truly thank you for your dedication, devotion and each and every way you supported the sport of beagling.  Your wisdom, hard work, field champions, everything you shared will be greatly missed and a huge hole has been left that just can't be filled.  You have accomplished many good things in life. You worked hard and always followed the path of honesty. You sleep well, our dear friend. The path you have laid down is one thing worth emulating.  We will forever carry you in our hearts.

We send continued prayers and deepest sympathy to his lovely wife and best friend, Kathy, their children, grandchildren and friends.  May God grant you all you need to get through this terrible loss.  Hope you know you will never be alone and Chris will always be by your sides and you can talk to him any time.  He will continue to watch over all of us, as he becomes our angel above.

Gene Clark passes away

It is with a heavy heart that we received the news from Lisa Belcher that Virgil E. “Gene” Clark passed away at the age of 83 today, 3/1/23. He had a fall and hit his head on the cement step and bleeding couldn't be stopped.  God did not want him to suffer so he put his arms around him and brought him home so there would be no pain or suffering. Our deepest sympathy, thoughts and prayers are with his lovely wife, best friend and soul mate, Jan Clark for the recent loss of her mother and now her beloved husband, best friend and just the love of her life, Gene. Our hearts and prayers go out to their children, families and friends for their terrible loss. Sometimes Prayer is the only Gift

We can give to the people we love.

My prayer for you today is for

God to take care, bless and

Protect you and your loved ones

Gene and Jan belong to Portage County and Buckeye. They ran their dogs under the kennel name Fletcher Hill. They moved to Ohio from California many years ago and supported the trials in Ohio, Pennsylvania and did all they could to keep Portage County going for brace beagling after they lost their senior members, Derths, Erlenbacks, Yochman, George Gealy, Kathy Blinsinger, etc. You have to admire those that step up to the plate when no one is left to keep their beagle club alive. Gene and Jan always went to Marietta dedicatedly, supported the Heartland, Lorain County, Chief Tarhe and many others. You couldn’t ask for nicer people and they would help anyone who needed it. Their home was not far from Portage and was the old Gealy property which they bought in 2006. Gene and Jan were a very loving, happy and devoted couple.

We know if Gene could, he would tell the love of his life Jan…

I Am Always There - You're Never Alone

When you're feeling down and blue,

And life is being cruel to you,

Just remember you're not on your own.

I'm always there; you're never alone.

You might not be able to see my face,

As hard as you look around the place,

But close your eyes and think of me,

And before you know it, there will be me.

Keep me in the midst of your mind,

And life will seem easier, I think you'll find,

So when life gets too dark to bear,

Just close your eyes and I will be there.

Gene, you will forever be in our hearts and live on through the many cherished memories. We thank you for your dedication, devotion and all the work you put into our sport and beagle clubs. Please give everyone a hug up there for us, as we love and miss every one of you and are eternally grateful for all you gave to the sport. Rest in Peace our Dear Friend and please continue to watch over all of us.

If Jan could, she would tell you…

I cried when you passed away.

I still cry today.

Although I loved you dearly,

I couldn't make you stay.

A golden heart stopped beating.

Hard working hands at rest.

God broke my heart to prove

to me he only takes the best.

Jerry ran his dogs under the kennel name Otter River and he was a force to reckon with when he came to a field trial and was very successful.  Otter River Cave Man was one of his favorites and his pride and joy.  He and Jim Halley would banter back and forth on who would win -- Cave Man or Highlander.  A couple more favorites were Otter River Jaimie, My Girl, Kizzie and he had Molasses, Cave Boy and Cave Girl.  Cave Man produced many field champions, and they would stay!

Jerry belonged to Central Virginia till it went gundog and belonged to Apple Valley.  He donated kennels to Mountain State and supported them, the Federations, National, License and Sanction trials, Derby Classics throughout the North and South until his health didn't allow him to participate.  There are many cherished memories at the Southern, Midwestern, Mid Dixie, Heartland, Eastern, International and Northeastern. Jerry poured his heart and soul into Beagling for as long as his health allowed.  His dedication, devotion, hard work, support and friendship through the years were greatly appreciated.  He will forever be in our hearts and live on through the many cherished memories.

Art Slike passes away.

It is with a heavy heart that we received the news from Alfie and Larry Williams and Mike Luchetta that Art Slike passed away on September 21, 2023, at the age of 83. Art is the son of Robert F Slike who was editor of Hounds and Hunting and then it went to his sons, Robert Jr. (Editor) and Art; before it was sold to Tom DePriest a few years ago. The current owners are now John and Chris Porter in Mississippi.

There have been many changes throughout the years; but I don't think any of us have forgotten about the Beagling Bible as it was known when Robert was the Editor and then the baton was passed onto Art Slike. Robert and his son, Art would attend and cover all the Federations, license trials and have been very instrumental in covering all areas in the Beagling world through the years. Their home club was McKean County near Bradford, PA. Art went into the Brace Beagling Hall of Fame in 2000. We thank them for their dedication, support as they were very instrumental through the years in all facets of Beagling.

We thank Art's son Chris for calling Alfie Williams, Kim Schrotenboer, Mike Luchetta, etc, to let us know. There are many cherished memories of hunting trips, shopping, Field Trials, stories, and our thoughts and prayers are with the family for everything they need to get through this difficult time.

It is with a heavy heart that we received the news from Dave Kerr that Glenn Bell from Tri County and Allegany Beagle Clubs passed away on September 17, 2023, at the age of 92.  Glenn ran his Beagles under the kennel name Bell Vue and finished many field champions.  He was a force to reckon with and you couldn't ask for a more devoted man who had a very precious smile.
